Impeachment of Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas

Republicans rushed and impeached Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas for allegedly failing to enforce border laws without presenting any evidence. The vote count was 214-213. Despite being impeached, Mayorkas' daily work won't be disrupted. The impeachment will now move to the Senate for a conviction vote, requiring a two-thirds majority which is unlikely due to the Democratic majority. Republicans pushed forward with the impeachment despite concerns of missing members due to a snowstorm. Some Republicans including Mike Gallagher voted against the impeachment and subsequently announced decisions such as not seeking re-election. Democrat Dan Goldman criticized the GOP's actions as a reflection of their extreme stance.
