The polyvagal theory challenges the old model of stress, suggesting that there are three states of the nervous system: parasympathetic, fight or flight, and shut down. Living in the parasympathetic state allows us to truly experience reality and live abundantly, while fight or flight mode leads to anxiety and feeling overwhelmed. Shut down state, similar to depression, numbs us and disconnects the mind-body connection. Disregulation occurs when we are stuck in the fight or flight or shut down state, unable to return to the regulated parasympathetic state, leading to imbalance, stress, and a lack of resiliency in the nervous system.
