Media's Dilemma in Covering Trump's Political Rise
The media has been struggling to cover Donald Trump's political rise right from the start. Initially, they found it challenging to decide on the best approach - whether to cover him aggressively due to his norm-breaking candidacy or to try to understand his appeal as a unique candidate. When Trump first ran, the networks treated him as a novelty candidate to spice up what they thought would be a dull campaign. They provided him with excessive airtime, letting him promote his products and break their own norms. However, when he won, the media had to shift gears and cover him more seriously, trying to make up for the initial lack of critical coverage and address him like any other political candidate.
