Recommendations for Heavy Resistance Exercises for Endurance Athletes

To optimize muscle growth while avoiding muscle failure, it is recommended to lift weights with one repetition left in reserve. This still provides the desired neuromuscular stimulus for strength adaptations. Typically, three to four sets are performed. Plyometric exercises like box jumps and drop jumps are also included. The intent is to lift explosively, even with heavy weights. The lowering phase is usually two to three seconds. Both double legged and single legged exercises can be included.
