Responding to Untrue Realities
People sometimes respond to situations as if they were true when objectively they are not, which can range from an overvalued idea to a hallucinatory experience. This can include misperceiving something or fully immersive hallucinatory episodes, such as in PTSD flashbacks where individuals completely misinterpret their surroundings, believing they have returned to the traumatic event. In PTSD, nightmares are not exact replicas of the trauma but variations, while malingering involves exact replication of the trauma to fake symptoms.
