Nietzsche's View on Consciousness and Social Coordination
Nietzsche suggests that most of our mental life can proceed unconsciously, with consciousness developed to facilitate social coordination. He argues that language and consciousness evolved hand in hand, as some mental activity needed to be conscious in order to be effectively communicated for social cooperation. The hypothesis proposes that consciousness was necessary for humans to coordinate and sustain communities effectively, which would have been challenging if all mental activities were unconscious.
