Challenges in Trust and Satisfaction with Democratic Governance
Citizens in democracies are experiencing a decline in trust in politicians and satisfaction with the state of governance. This is reflected in Western countries where less than half of people in Britain believe that the state is run for the benefit of all the people, and a quarter of Brits express a preference for being ruled by a strong leader who could ignore Parliament. The dissatisfaction with democratic choices raises concerns about the future of democracy, which is fundamentally about ruling ourselves.
