The exploitation of polymetallic nodules on the seafloor represents a potential solution to dwindling terrestrial mineral reserves needed for battery manufacturing. However, the urgency of extracting these resources poses significant risks to the deep-sea ecosystem, including possible reductions in ocean oxygenation levels. A careful approach is essential to ensure that in pursuit of alternative solutions for sustainability, we do not unintentionally cause ecological harm that undermines the very solutions we seek.
