The Evolution of Technology

Technology has undergone a significant shift in definition and focus over the decades. In 1967, technology encompassed a broad range of advancements such as computers, rockets, supersonic airplanes, new medicines, and revolutionary agricultural practices. However, in contemporary discussions, technology is largely synonymous with information technology, primarily relating to computers. This tunnel vision on the digital realm highlights a stagnation in other areas of technological advancement. While progress in information technology has been intense, fields related to transportation and infrastructure have seen little to no improvement, with current systems displaying inefficiencies and regression compared to past innovations. Furthermore, the prevalence of digital devices creates a distraction from the lack of advancement in the physical world, leading to an underappreciation of the importance of tangible technologies. This raises questions about the balance between advancements in the virtual domain versus the necessary evolution of the material world in which we live.
