NOTE

Deliberately oversteer towards excellence

Excellence is pursued by deliberately oversteering towards higher standards and tighter constraints. Making decisions is about choosing between being wrong in one direction or the other. It's better to be slightly understaffed than overstaffed, demanding a high bar in recruiting and resourcing. Executives must continuously push for excellence by setting impossibly high standards and resisting relaxation of constraints. Rejecting candidates and headcount requests at the finish line reinforces the importance of maintaining exceptionally high standards. The role of the executive is to be the tension for tighter constraints and higher bars, constantly challenging the natural drift towards mediocrity and being the driving force towards achieving the impossible standard.
