Jack Barsky was shocked by the pervasive Stasi surveillance revealed after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
He was unaware of it while living, studying, and working in East Germany.
He wasn't directly exposed to it, partly due to being a member of the elite.
This realization made him appreciate American freedom more and understand the extent of suppression in East Germany.
