Turing's discrete state machine and the collapse of state structures
Turing's discrete state machine was an interesting thought experiment. While it could replicate behaviors over a short time period, adding input made it more complex. However, knowing the input allowed for simpler state transitions. Turing wanted to explain humanity through a computer program, but later realized the non-computability of numbers. Philosopher John Searle disagreed with the idea that computational systems could truly understand and created the Chinese room experiments to argue against computationalism. The argument revolves around the idea that syntax is not enough for meaning. We will discuss this further in the show.
