The ability to generate humor is a great benchmark for AGI. Being funny is extremely hard and requires deep understanding of humans, cleverness, and knowledge about various aspects of the human condition. If an AI is able to be an effective stand-up comedian and make people laugh genuinely, it shows that it can deeply understand humans and perform a complex computational task. Humor is a deeply honest form of communication, as people laugh instinctively when something is genuinely funny. It is a benchmark similar to the Turing test, as it requires convincing humans and taps into the complexity of human thought and emotion.
