NOTE

Recognizing the Nuance Beyond the Nail

Institutional responses often favor a one-size-fits-all approach by equipping for a singular type of threat, exemplified by the metaphor of building more hammers to address perceived nails. However, this does not account for the complexity of geopolitical challenges, particularly concerning China. There is an urgent need to acknowledge ongoing conflicts already in play, where the U.S. has been targeted through proxy warfare and has overlooked its implications. A critical distinction must be made between the Chinese Communist Party and the Chinese populace, the latter of whom often suffer under the regime. Using shorthand terms can oversimplify these layers of conflict and victimhood.
