The Individual

In Our Time: Philosophy

NOTE

The Complex Nature of the Individual

The Renaissance saw a different view of the individual compared to what the speaker saw. The individual is seen as inherently unstable and cannot escape conflicts by retreating into a private sphere. Freud also challenged the idea of the individual as the master of their own house, suggesting that individuality must be suppressed to serve society. Freud believed that conflicts arise from unwelcome desires that are repressed, as well as internalizing the behavior of those around us. These conflicts in the inner world derive from the individual.
