Co-Regulation Breathing Exercise
🫂 Practice relational regulation by sitting forehead to forehead with your partner. 🙌 Guys, place your hands on her lower ribs and have her do the same on you to feel each other breathe. 💨 Follow her breath as you take 30-40 breaths together, as men have a larger oxygen capacity. ❤️ Your bodies will synchronize; breath rates match, then heart rates after about 20 breaths. 🧘♀️ Close your eyes, tune into your body, and notice any changes to anxiety or fear. 🤝 Practice a few times a week to build intimacy, before sex, or after the kids are down. 💪 This exercise helps re-acclimate your nervous system, building trust in yourself or the relationship. 🧠 Remember, your body has to trust first; the mind will follow; you can't cognitively think your way into a secure attachment.
This breathing exercise promotes co-regulation with your partner by synchronizing breath and heart rates. Regular practice builds intimacy and helps re-acclimate your nervous system to trust, which is key to addressing attachment issues. Focus on physical sensations and bodily trust, as cognitive approaches alone are insufficient for achieving secure attachment.
