Comparing Cattle Population and Milk Productivity Across Countries
In the United States, the number of beef cattle has decreased from 140 million in 1970 to 90 million today. However, the same amount of beef is being produced. India and Brazil have more cattle combined than the rest of the world. The United States has 9 million dairy cows, while India has 300 million. The term 'idle cows' refers to cows with low milk productivity. American cows produce 10-20 times more milk than cows in India. In some parts of Asia and Africa, cows are productive for a certain amount of time but not very productive overall.
