NOTE

Embrace Genetic Diversity

Understanding genetics involves differentiating between genomes, genetics, and genotypes. While a genome encompasses the entire set of genetic material, genetics refers to all variations, and genotypes represent specific allele variations. Variations in base pairs are common, with an average person having about 20 million variations from the reference genome. The distinction between mutations and polymorphisms lies in their prevalence; a variant present in over 1% of the population is a polymorphism, while one below 1% is considered a mutation. Although mutations often have more significant impacts, many common variations, such as those determining eye color, can influence traits without major effects. Thus, the biological difference is subtle despite defined thresholds.
