Our attention and empathy are naturally distributed based on what captures our interest, which can lead to a lack of connection with our local communities. We may feel sympathy for distant situations like the Ukrainian conflict or the situation in Gaza, but it doesn't compare to caring for our neighbors. This imbalance can result in our most virtuous emotions feeling hollow while our more hostile ones dominate.
