Denial & neglect in stroke patients

Imagine losing the ability to recognize the left side of your body, like it doesn't even exist. That's what happens in neglect. But a simple irrigation can bring back awareness temporarily. Sometimes denial happens because the person can't update their model of reality. Denial and inability can be hard to separate. Defense mechanisms like overcompensation, displacement, identification, rationalization, intellectualization, and sublimation can also occur. Art is often characterized by sublimation, according to Freud.
