To excel in a specific domain, such as football, guitar, or chess, it is essential to practice the skills relevant to that domain. Many people play sports or engage in activities without breaking them down into specific skills. However, to truly improve, it is important to deconstruct the domain into sub-skills and rehearse each one. This applies to subjects like test-taking as well. Rather than simply reading notes or highlighting, one should rehearse the actual steps required for the test, such as reading the question, searching for relevant information in memory, and collating it into a well-formed answer. By focusing on rehearsing the necessary skills, one can effectively prepare for any subject or domain.
