Science In Action

NOTE

Dissecting the Effects of Manipulating Brain Receptors

Manipulating the receptor of fentanyl in specific neurons in the amygdala allows for the dissociation of negative reinforcement without affecting positive reinforcement. Chronic exposure to fentanyl leads these neurons to signal for continuous administration of the drug, causing dysphoria upon withdrawal. The aim is to inhibit these cells in the amygdala to prevent the generation of stress signals during fentanyl withdrawal.
