Reasons for Demonstrations in East Germany
Demonstrations in East Germany were driven by a well-educated, politicised, and comfortable population that desired reform and a say in their government. The populace, highly intelligent due to quality education, felt frustrated that despite their education and political awareness, there was no room for change or participation in governance. Unlike the past where people sought stability and peace, the citizens now demanded reform and were dismayed by the lack of response from the aging and ailing leadership. The stagnant authoritarian regime, coupled with the absence of attempts at reform or engagement with dissenting voices, fueled the protests in East Germany.
