Researching involves a top-down focus, knowing what you're looking for and finding something relevant. Exploring, on the other hand, involves a bottom-up approach, starting from the bottom and moving upwards. The note-taking process may not differ significantly between these two mental states, but the mental state itself varies during the researching and exploring phases.
