Shame is commonly associated with feelings of inadequacy, particularly among overachievers, perfectionists, and anxious individuals. Many people experience shame when they face challenges such as taking longer to complete university, making a career change, or starting anew in junior roles. Another significant source of shame is being fired or laid off, as it highlights the disparity between our expectations for the future and our current reality. This mismatch can lead to a focus on perceived judgments from others and a sense of frustration.
