How Not To Die

NOTE

The Health Benefits of a Low Sodium Diet

As individuals age, their blood pressure tends to increase in Western populations, while it decreases in certain other groups. This difference can be attributed to diet, particularly the consumption of high-sodium foods. High blood pressure is largely a choice, and it can be controlled by adopting a low-sodium diet. In the United States, approximately one in three people have high blood pressure. The two primary dietary risks for high blood pressure are not eating enough fruit and consuming excessive salt. Salt, which is 40% sodium, causes the body to retain more water and consequently increases blood pressure. By reducing salt intake, individuals can lower their blood pressure and reduce the risk of death and disability associated with high blood pressure. Three simple steps to follow for a low-sodium diet are: avoid adding salt at the table, stop adding salt while cooking, and taste food before adding salt.
