NOTE

Different types of estrogen and progesterone used in menopausal medicine

The estrogen and progesterone used in menopausal medicine can be obtained from pregnant men or pregnant horses, where their urine is extracted and used to create estrogen-like components. The standard estrogen-containing product used to be Provera, while the progesterone used to be medroxyprogesterone acetate due to its low bioavailability. However, micronized progesterone has been developed to address this issue. The FDA lumps all estrogens and progestrogens into one group, but risks are stratified based on the specific ones taken. Estradiol and progesterone are preferred in practice due to their lower risk association compared to synthetic options. The difference between bioidentical and synthetic hormones lies in their production, with bioidentical hormones being more similar to what the body produces and processed in a lab, derived from a more natural product.
