The potential downfall of the Roman Empire could have occurred at various points, especially during the third and fourth centuries marked by frequent usurpations. Emperors prioritized dealing with internal usurpers over external threats like barbarian invasions, as challenges within the existing political framework were deemed more perilous than external disruptions which could leave the political system intact despite regional destruction.
