Bechtel, a company known for managing complex construction projects, took on the big dig along with several other major projects around the world. While they received praise and support from their headquarters in San Francisco, on the ground there was a lot of conflict. There were even discussions about replacing Bechtel with a different company. Despite criticisms of their arrogance and secrecy, Bechtel's involvement was deemed necessary to keep the project alive.
