Measuring and Understanding Cognitive Abilities Across Different Species
Measuring intelligence across species can be challenging, but researchers have found a way to understand individual differences in cognitive abilities. By using a variety of cognitive tasks and observing how well animals solve them, correlations among different abilities can be identified. Surprisingly, these correlations are generally positive, indicating that species like chimps, dogs, and gibbons have a general factor of intelligence that extends across different problem-solving areas. This discovery challenges the assumption of trade-offs and highlights the remarkable similarities in cognitive abilities across species.
