#14 - Boyan Slat: Solving Ocean Plastic
Win-Win with Liv Boeree
Challenges in recycling and market dynamics
The low cost of producing and introducing plastic into the environment, combined with the relatively high cost of recycling and taking it out, makes it more cost-effective to make new plastic rather than reuse existing plastic. This is influenced by oil prices, as there are times when producing new plastic is significantly cheaper than recycling. In contrast, the energy-intensive process of turning bauxite into aluminium makes recycling more favorable for aluminium than producing new aluminium, leading to lower aluminium waste in some countries.
