I think Rush is an odious person with an odious legacy, but I can admit that he was an enormously gifted broadcaster. What was it about him that broke through? Why did he become what he became? It's a great question because part of it is his connection with the formal structures of politics. He wasn't just an entertainer. The New York Times calls him the precinct captain for the Republican Revolution. That doesn't seem quite enough to explain what he became.
