Protest, Harassment, and Solidarity on Campus

Melissa Melendez, known as 'Flag Girl' for her role in the protest, faced threats and derogatory comments that highlighted the intense hostility against those advocating for minority rights. As a result, the students sought safety and support by traveling in groups and increasing cohabitation, demonstrating a need for solidarity amidst the threats. The situation escalated when Melissa and her friends attempted to confront counter-protesters, only to be met with increased surveillance from Campus Safety, further emphasizing the climate of fear and the challenges faced by marginalized student activists on campus.
