Understanding Variability and Adaptation in Learning

Individuals exhibit variability in their performance and learning over time. This variability can appear messy and inconsistent at a detailed level, with periods of improvements and regressions. However, when observed over a longer time scale, it reveals a transition in learning effectiveness. Variability should be viewed not as errors, but as the system's adaptation and refinement, enhancing functionality over time. Manipulating the environment to predict and control individual responses is not feasible, as individuals bring unique characteristics and responses to tasks. Providing individuals with agency and considering affordances as invitations to action are crucial in facilitating effective learning.
