The Mind/Body Problem

In Our Time: Philosophy

NOTE

The Soul Is Immortal

Plato believed the soul is immortal and composed of reason, spirit, and appetite. He compared the soul to a charioteer controlling two horses: one noble and trying to reach eternal truths, and the other black and wanting to stay on earth. The charioteer, representing reason, struggles to navigate these two forces. Plato viewed the soul as separate from the body and the distinction between soul and mind is blurry. The terms 'soul' and 'mind' were used interchangeably in philosophical debates for a long time. Overall, Plato's complex view of the soul includes these three parts and the belief in its immortality.
