Causes and Symptoms of Hyperkalemia
In patients with hemolyzed samples and normal kidney function, without acidosis or medication use, we can consider not retesting. Hyperkalemia can be divided into two categories: increased total body potassium and potassium redistribution. Causes of increased total body potassium include renal dysfunction, Addison's type 4 RTA, and drug-induced hyperkalemia. Causes of potassium redistribution include acidemia, rhabdomyolysis, and tumor lysis syndrome. Symptoms of hyperkalemia should be taken seriously, as the first symptom could be death.
