NOTE

All Cause Mortality

Physical fitness directly influences all-cause mortality, with higher fitness levels associated with lower chances of dying in subsequent years. VO2 max, a measure of oxygen consumption during exercise, significantly correlates with fitness levels; as individuals become fitter, their VO2 max can increase, providing substantial health benefits. While past beliefs suggested a fitness plateau around 10-12 METs (metabolic equivalents), recent findings indicate that fitness benefits continue to rise up to 15-16 METs. Competitions, like those in cross-country skiing, demonstrate that consistently active individuals performing well in races experience even lower mortality rates compared to less active or slower peers. This underscores the importance of maintaining high fitness levels for long-term health.
