Human beings evolved as hunter-gatherers for most of our history, and then were subsistence farmers before the industrial era. The modern lifestyle of traveling in metal boxes, flying in metal tubes, and consuming processed food is a recent phenomenon, contrasting with our evolutionary past. Research conducted mainly in Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic (WEIRD) societies represents only about 10% of the world's population and the majority of biomedical, psychological, and medical data. Therefore, to truly understand human evolution, health, and the effects of diet and physical activity, it is essential to study diverse populations outside the West, as their lifestyles and bodies have adapted differently.
