The Role of Prediction in Supporting Learning

Prediction plays a crucial role in supporting learning as it aligns with our natural tendency to predict outcomes. Teachers should communicate the importance of prediction to students, as it aids in understanding and learning. Predictions can be confirmed or refuted, both of which offer different benefits. When a prediction is confirmed, learning is enhanced as it reinforces existing knowledge and strengthens neural pathways. On the other hand, when a prediction is proven wrong, it triggers a heightened state of alertness and the need to learn. This process of adjusting predictions is similar to an animal avoiding danger and adapting its behavior. In the classroom, prediction serves as a basic trigger for learning and helps students actively engage with new information.
