Why Signal won’t compromise on encryption, with president Meredith Whittaker
Decoder with Nilay Patel
** WhatsApp Collects Lots of Metadata**
WhatsApp uses the Signal encryption protocol for message encryption, but it does not protect metadata like Signal does. Signal does not have users' profile information, introduced groups, or encryption protections to minimize the collection of metadata. However, WhatsApp collects users' profile information, profile photos, information about who is talking to whom, and who is a group member. This metadata is powerful and can reveal intimate information about people when combined with Facebook's vast amount of data. Therefore, it is important to note that WhatsApp metadata could easily be joined with Facebook data to reveal extremely intimate information about people.
