Ep. 281: Learning Hard Things
Deep Questions with Cal Newport
Three Categories of Note Taking
The three categories of note taking are working memory extension for temporary storage of information, obligation tracking for maintaining relevant information related to each obligation, and capturing key ideas about work and life. Each category requires a different system and has a different rate of refresh and reset. Working memory needs to be reset every 10 minutes, obligation tracking is accessed daily, and capturing broader ideas is reviewed in detail much less often. While there are more complicated systems and methodologies available, they are optional. The key is to ensure that all three categories are covered with some sort of reasonable techno system, without mixing them together.
