The Importance of Giving Kids Autonomy in Learning
I gave my students autonomy and choices in their learning, which is uncommon in schools and at home. I wanted them to have a say in what they learn, how they learn, and how they showcase their knowledge. Kids rarely have these opportunities. I made an effort to find out their interests and start there. Other teachers wondered how my students were engaged and excited to come to my classroom. The secret is understanding their interests and not forcing them to learn something they don't see the value in.
