The liver functions to process excess nutrients when there is a caloric imbalance, typically caused by an overload of nutrients. The liver is not naturally geared to store fat, and when hepatocytes contain over 5% fat, it is considered abnormal. The liver processes fat through de novo lipogenesis and exogenous input through nutrition, mainly manifesting as triglycerides.
