The Pursuit of Hockey

The speaker had a challenging childhood with their parents getting remarried to different partners, leading to feelings of being unwelcome in their father's house. Despite these challenges, hockey became their main focus and passion. They played various sports in high school but hockey stood out. They aspired to join the Canadian National Program for women's hockey and eventually got scouted for the Olympic team. The speaker traveled back and forth multiple times a week in their grade 12 year to play on a triple A women's team in Vancouver and ultimately achieved their goal of being scouted for the national team. They had to navigate personal struggles, including gender dysphoria, but chose to suppress these feelings initially due to fear of losing their family and church community.
