Gospel Indicatives and Imperatives
Things Unseen with Sinclair B. Ferguson
Salvation is Not Earned by Effort
Many individuals mistakenly believe that their worthiness for salvation stems from their own good deeds and moral efforts. This perspective leads them to overestimate their goodness compared to others, thinking that their decent behavior will earn them acceptance by God. Even when confronted with their sins, they often resolve to 'turn over a new leaf' or work harder to improve rather than grasping the true message of the Gospel. This misunderstanding distorts the grammar of the Gospel, causing them to misinterpret the fundamental truths about sin and redemption, perceiving the indicative statements as imperatives, thereby missing the essence of grace and the need for faith in Christ's sacrificial love.
