Political polarization is fueled largely by misperceptions, where individuals often dislike their political opponents based on beliefs they do not actually hold. This phenomenon creates a landscape where out-party animosity surpasses in-party affection, suggesting that many votes cast are motivated more by dissatisfaction with the opposing side than support for one’s own. A study identified a progression of six stages in which individuals consistently exaggerate the extreme views of their opponents, leading to a distorted perception of political beliefs. For instance, individuals on the left may incorrectly assume that all right-leaning individuals are racists, further entrenching divisions.
