Capturing Emotions in Poetry

Poets have the job of capturing and expressing emotions, but the influence of past poets like Wordsworth and Coleridge makes it challenging for new poets to be seen as new and fresh. For instance, Phyllis Wheatley, the first African American to publish a book of poems, although talented, did not fully convey her past and emotions in her poems, which were often written for specific occasions.
