Understanding the Dual Control Model of Sexual Response
The sexual response in humans is governed by the dual control model, which integrates excitatory and inhibitory impulses. The sexual excitation system, akin to an accelerator, detects various stimuli—visual, auditory, olfactory, tactile, gustatory—as well as thoughts and beliefs associated with sexuality, signaling a turn-on effect that operates continuously. Concurrently, the sexual inhibitory system acts as brakes by identifying factors or reasons that counter the turn-on signals, thereby regulating sexual arousal. This interplay of systems illustrates the complexity of sexual desire, highlighting that both excitation and inhibition are active processes influencing our sexual perceptions and experiences.
