The Connection Between the Hebrew Bible and the Sermon on the Mount
The Hebrew Bible consists of three sections: Torah (instruction), Prophets, and Writings. The Torah tells the foundational story of God's purposes and the covenant with the family of Abraham. Despite God's rescue and invitation for them to represent Him, they repeatedly violate the covenant. Jesus presents himself as speaking with the authority of God revealed on Mount Sinai and sets his teaching alongside the Torah, stating 'You've heard that it was said' and then giving his teaching, thereby intensifying or replacing the existing teachings. This is akin to making a bold statement using the Constitution as a basis and then giving a new directive.
