To break a bad habit, follow these four steps: make the cue invisible by unsubscribing from emails and reducing exposure to the trigger, make the habit unattractive by avoiding attractive stimuli, make it difficult by increasing friction and adding more steps to the behavior, and make it unsatisfying by adding immediate consequences or costs to the habit. Following these steps provides a high-level framework for breaking a bad habit.
